This is as cheap as I have ever seen this champagne and is a great opportunity to try one of the champagne regions top roses for around £75 under the general market value.

This weeks Sparkling deals, 8th April 2011

Duval Leroy Premier Cru 75cl - £14.99 at Waitrose (http://www.waitrosewine.com)


This is an exclusive to the on-trade and Waitrose. Its a Chardonnay dominant blend which gives it great finesse and a vibrant acidity. It also has subtle floral notes and a mouth-filling, creamy mousse. All the grapes come from premier cru vineyards which means they have been rated 90-99% on the eshelle des crus. Overall this means the grapes can achieve greater ripeness due their preferable location. Waitrose claim this is a half price offer but I have always thought of this champagne to be worth around £25 rather than £30 but at £14.99 its a steal.

Nicolas Feuillatte Brut NV - £14.49 at Tesco (www.tesco.com)


I always seem to be recommending this champagne but the fact is that at £14.49 it is great value and a decent tipple. Buy a bottle and make the most of this fantastic weather while it lasts.

Good Valentines Day Champagne Deals

Here are a few supermarket deals on at the moment which caught my eye. Buy one for Valentines and one for the cupboard.

Lanson Rose Brut NV £17.40 in Tescos - light with red berry fruits, this is a good partner for all the chocolates you will be gorging on! Don't be put off by the hidious limited edition bottle.

Nicholas Feuillate NV £14 in Morrisons (£14.49 in Tescos) - One of my favourites out of the more reasonably priced champagne houses. The tangy green apple flavours are nicely balanced by the trademark yeasty notes.

Taittinger Brut Reserve NV £23.32 in Sainsburys - Though Taittinger has devalued over the passed year or so, the liquid in the bottle is still great. Taittinger, traditionally, has a high proportion of Chardonney in the blend which gives it a lovely perfume and a light, elegant nature. This is perfect to get your juices flowing before the big meal.

With Valentines day around the corner now is a good time to keep an eye out for some tasty drinks deals in the supermarkets. This one from Sainsbury's is a good one to start us off.

Lanson is generally in the cheaper end of the Grand Marque champagne scale but it's not a champagne to be sniffed at. Lanson is one of the oldest champagne houses around and was founded back in 1760. Traditionally is very light and acidic in youth with heaps of mouthwatering, citrus flavours. This is due to it not going through malolactic fermentation like the majority of other big name champagnes. It makes it the ideal partner for simple fish dishes. Try it as a partner to oysters as well, they are a match made in heaven. The lemony flavours cut through the juicy oysters perfectly and leave your pallet cleans and refreshed.

It is worth mentioning that this is not the ideal champagne to drink on its own. The high acidity levels could leave you with terrible heart burn!

Christmas Sparkle - Champagne

I don't think it's too early to start talking about Christmas and it is definitely not too early to start taking advantage of all the great wine deals currently out. It's one of those times of year that you can splash out a bit and treat yourself to some champagne. There have been some CRAZY deals recently. Morrisons have just finished a special on Taittinger for £16 a bottle which sold out in a couple of days. Here are my favourite current deals:

Moët and Chandon Brut Imperial NV - Buy 2 for £30 in Asda

I don't confess to being the biggest Moët fan in the world, but at £15 a bottle it is a complete bargain. The extremely long winded way in which champagne is made means that it is expensive by nature to make and therefore costs a lot to buy on the shelves. Moët is made out of a high proportion of Premier Cru and Grand Cru grapes (the better ones) and is one of the more approachable styles of the bigger champagne houses. It's worth mentioning that Majestic are also selling this at a very reasonable price of £24 a bottle until 29th November. It isn't too dry and has a refreshing fruit focus, but still has the distinctive yeasty champagne character. It is also incredibly versatile and brings a great sense of occasion to any party or event. This champagne would make an interesting accompaniment to your Turkey dinner on Christmas day.

Taittinger Brut Reserve NV - £16.99 in Tesco until Monday 28th November

This is a lot of champagne for your money. Taittinger is one of my favourite champagne houses and is one of the few famous houses which is still family owned. The Taittinger family own a large share of their own vineyards and as a result of this, can control all aspects of quality, from grape to bottle. The style has always had a high proportion of Chardonnay in the blend, which keeps it light and fragrant, and the longer than average bottle aging gives it subtle, toasty notes. Interestingly, this was James Bond's favourite champagne in the books; his love for Bollinger did not appear until they started making James Bond films.

Mumm Cordon Rouge NV - £14.99 in Tesco until Monday 28th November

Another Tesco deal. They are really going for it this week. Mumm is famous for sponsoring the F1; it seems such a waste to see Jenson spraying this all over the place because its great champagne. This is a bit more full bodied than the previous two champagnes. It has a higher concentration of Pinot Noir which gives it plenty of body and fresh red fruits on the pallet. This would be a great champagne for desserts such as trifle and Fruits of the Forest.
